Psalm 1

The Way of the Righteous and the End of the Ungodly

Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
    Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
    Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.
The ungodly are not so,
But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the ungodly shall perish.
(Psalm 1:1-6 NKJV)

I love the way the book of Psalms starts out, it pretty much sums everything up, doesn’t it? It all boils down to either following the way of God, or the way of the world. I believe the key word in this Psalm is “delight.” What is it that one chooses to delight in?

I remember a year or so ago talking with someone who was not a Christian. This woman was being tossed to and fro by the world, not knowing which way to go. I told her to go pick up the Bible and read Psalm 1, it has all your answers. But “oh no,” she said. “No way am I reading that.” I said, “It will not even take a minute to read, and it has all your answers.” But no way she would pick up the Bible and just read this little bit.

When we delight in the things of God, the Christian life is not a burden filled with a whole lot of religious rituals to perform, but an awesome walk with God. We go to bed at night knowing, as the song goes, “all is well with my soul,” and today my life counted for something of eternal value. Lord, help me and all my readers to “delight” in your Word and all things of God that we may grow stronger and stronger and bear much fruit for your namesake.

  1. Hi Ken,

I am so blessed to have relationships and resources in my life that encourage and build me up. It is always heartbreaking when people cross our paths that do not delight in the Lord and share our same joy and passion!

    Wonderful post!
    Blessing friend, :)

  2. Hello Ken. Thanks for posting this! My kids and I are working on memorising this at the moment and I was just thinking today that it really is quite simple - if we want to experience intimacy with God and the blessings that come with it, just make the time to regularly read the bible and meditate on it and enjoy doing it. I have always found the times when I have focused on reading the bible intensively and diligently to be times of anointing, answered prayers, increasing inner strength and of course a real sense of closeness to God.
    God bless you brother.

  3. Hi Ken,
I have noticed that when I tell a non Christian to read the Bible they shrug it off as a book of fairy tales. They aren't even willing to seek the Truth, they just want to complain and complain. This makes me so sad.

I love the Psalms and Psalm 1 opens up with the whole picture. :)

    Blessings brother,

  4. Amen! Yes all is well with my soul... Blessings Ken!

  5. There is a great delight in the Word of God when you read and meditate on it. When I was a child we sang, "Just like a tree planted by the waterside, I shall not be moved."
I praise God I was brought up to go to Sunday School and had a mother who instilled the love of God in me.

  6. Hi Ken ~ pretty much does sum it up for us! I just love the Psalms! Blessings to you...Chelle

  7. I am constantly amazed at how God brings scriptures to life over and over. A passage I loved as a child takes on even a deeper, more personal meaning now! Thankful for the Holy Spirit who opens our eyes to the truth of God's Word. Be blessed!

  8. A wonder-full Easter Sunday blessing to you and yours!

May you experience the joy of the Truth this Resurrection Day – that we serve the Risen Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

Praise His name for His gift of salvation, and for the hope and promise of eternal life.

  9. hi ken,
there is a reason why Psalms rhymes with 'calms'.
it is always sad when a lost one would rather tailspin instead of trying to find truth in the Word of God~even some christians do that sometimes.
    ~God Bless~

  10. Comforting psalm! And I love the wallpaper!
